Facing Down Tragedy: What Comes Next?

Facing Down Tragedy: What Comes Next?

When the world is in turmoil, this is often a time when I retreat back to basic principles of my practice – breathing, meditation, Reiki – allowing me to cleanse my senses and tune out the noise outside.

When I hear of horrifying human events such as what happened last week in Iran, my defense mechanism goes into overdrive.  I recite the top 2 favourite curse words that have been part of my passionate vocabulary since the age of 12, “F*ck, Sh!t!”  This seems to be the best way to help me process what has happened.

Last week was no exception. And yes, I repeated and repeated those words many times that day, and the days that followed. And yes, this was followed by a retreat within myself.

Today, I felt inspired to sit down and write. The kind of compulsion that artists speak of when they are moved irresistibly to do their work. Maybe these feelgood words will be of some help to those who feel energetically affected by last week’s tragedy or by past tragedies that are still ingrained in their energy field.

Reflecting back on how last week began, with a shattering explosion and the loss of human lives, I have been at a loss to discern any coherent message.

Here in Canada, we feel the acute pain of the losses suffered by local families in the GTA, Edmonton, and other points across the country and around the globe.  How this loss impacts all of us as individuals, communities, and our consciousness as human beings cannot be measured.

This morning on my walk with Paz, my peaceful Bouvier, I asked a question to the universe: Why does this Sh!t happen?  We humans are always looking for reasons and answers.  If I’ve learned anything on my spiritual journey, it is that there is no definitive reason for why Shi!t happens.

It’s what we do after it happens. Do we retreat?  Sure, if you need to make a move inward, or your emotions lurch to the dark places of fear, anxiety, worry, stress, sadness, joylessness – take the time to feel it. Or maybe you’re like me, and you use your words to express your anger and disbelief openly.  It’s all good! After all, we are human, and we all have different ways of channeling the emotional chaos we sometimes feel.

Years ago, I suffered from panic disorder and 24/7 anxiety.  This changed when a generous soul introduced me to homeopathy and reiki.  I learned that we are energetic beings having a human experience. If this is new to you, or you are just on the path to your first energy ah-ha moments, I can only tell you that this perspective has brought abundant peace and wellness to my own life. This doesn’t negate life’s struggles; there are still days when I experience the full spectrum of fear, anger, and sadness.  Hearing of last week’s horrifying act of terror certainly qualified.

Today, I have the tools to raise my vibration and maintain a level of peacefulness, light, and feelgood energy. Sometimes this takes the form of amusing myself by hugging my dog or talking to a favourite bunny in the woods near my house.  There are many ways to acknowledge the Universe’s higher intelligence.

Start your day with a  feelgood design. Breathing, meditation, and Reiki are just a few simple suggestions to look into. When I was at the peak of my anxiety, I went to see a wellness provider who specialized in energy healing and homeopathy. I still send him thoughts of gratitude for starting me on my journey into the light.   His skills, training, and compassion were indispensable.  Let my story be a reminder that there is help and support, sometimes in places we don’t expect. Today, I know 100% that I am a breath away from peace and calm.

What comes next? There are so many ways to help the world when the lantern of hope has been shattered. Some will gather together for prayer or meditation. If I am aware of these vigils, I join in by sending distant healing, or higher vibrations of love and compassion.  I jack up my meditation and share the feelgood vibes wherever I go. I send higher vibrational energy out there to those who are effected on the frontlines of chaos and unfathomable, inhuman tragedy.

We look to our leaders for support and resolution. We seek out our neighbours and extend our hands with a smile, kind words, and sometimes just a simple nod of recognition, sharing our internal ache for all human suffering so that we know we are not alone.

And after that? This is the part that really brings home the point I’m trying to make. What do we do when our everyday life is already filled with common stresses: traffic, commerce, people, work, family, stuff?  Some are tasked with being caregivers for the diseased and the dying.  Others are facing these trials themselves. Life is hard enough before we are told about the inhumanity that our fellow human beings inflict upon one another and the heartbreak left in its wake.

The after-effects of mass destruction touch everyone. The vibrations of cries, anger, and fear are felt all over the world. They permeate the bedrock of memory and never fully dissipate.

911, the Holocaust, Apartheid, tsunamis, Rwanda, and on and on…

So, what comes next?

The right path in 2020 will be one that keeps us open to sharing kindness, love, and an understanding of our differences.  I trust that we are surrounded by universal guidance from a higher intelligence that teaches us to live one day at a time as a community of humans, cohabiting this our beautiful Earth, and working for the betterment of all.

Breathe, smile, and feelgood!
